DRIE FONTEINEN SCHAERBEEKSE KRIEK

CLASSIC

BEERSEL, BELGIUM

ABV: 6.0%

HOPS: AGED HOPS

Schaerbeekse are tart, sour cherries that grow in the Lambic-making region around Brussels. At one time they would’ve been the variety that all Kriek producers used, but now more readily available cherry varieties have replaced this one. Thankfully, Drie Fonteinen still make a Kriek with Schaerbeekse, though it’s hard to find. It’s deep pink in the glass and you get cherry right away, but it’s subtle and delicate alongside a floral, blossomy aroma and some almond and vanilla. Sharply acidic, the cherry bobs along in the background, adding depth and just a hint of fruitiness, as if you’ve caught the aroma of a cherry tree on a warm breeze—it’s not more than that, so don’t open this expecting sweet cherry juice. This beer ages really well (so if you manage to find it, get a few), giving berry or plum-like fruit while retaining the sharpness.
